The National Population Commission (NPC) has officially commenced nationwide implementation of its Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (e-CRVS) system, marking a transition from manual to fully digital civil registration across Nigeria.
The new framework, which took effect on July 4, 2026, was announced by the Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, during a press briefing in Abuja. He said all future civil registrations will now be processed exclusively through the digital VitalReg platform.
According to the Commission, Nigeria records an estimated five million births annually but continues to face low civil registration rates, with birth registration currently at about 57 per cent and death registration below 20 per cent.
To improve coverage, the NPC said it has established more than 4,000 functional registration centres across the country’s 774 local government areas.
The Commission also assured Nigerians that the digital framework will be sustained and that access to the national civil registration database will remain available for authorised users.
NPC said the transition to a digital registration system is expected to improve registration coverage, strengthen the reliability of national demographic data and support more effective planning and policymaking across the country.
