The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, and the National Population Commission, NPC, have strengthened their partnership to ensure newborns automatically receive National Identification Numbers immediately after birth registration.
The agreement was reached when NPC Chairman, Dr Aminu Yusuf, led a delegation on a visit to the NIMC headquarters in Abuja.
The collaboration is aimed at advancing the Federal Government’s digital identity programme under the principle of “One Person, One Identity” by integrating NPC’s electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics system with NIMC’s national identity database.
The initiative follows the launch of the integrated birth registration and NIN issuance programme in November 2023, which allows the registration of a newborn to trigger the generation of a unique NIN.
NPC, however, raised concerns over a backlog of about 10 million records awaiting NIN generation, as well as more than 557,000 records already transmitted but pending NIN issuance.
Responding, NIMC Director-General, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, attributed the backlog to technical issues involving Barnksforte Technologies Limited, a third-party technical consultant working with NPC on birth registration and NIN issuance.
Both agencies agreed that their technical teams would work together to reactivate the Handshake Protocol, address licence activation and develop a comprehensive technical training schedule.
The partnership is expected to accelerate NIN issuance for newborns and strengthen Nigeria’s digital identity and civil registration systems.
