The Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, has commenced a series of strategic working visits to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to drive the implementation of digital identity policies and the newly enacted NIMC Act 2026.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s national identity ecosystem in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s digital economy agenda and broader social development programmes.

The engagements began at the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, where the NIMC Director-General met with the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, and the Minister of State, Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite.

Discussions focused on integrating the provisions of the NIMC Act 2026 into national planning and citizen-centred initiatives to improve service delivery and national development.

Coker-Odusote stressed the importance of a trusted digital identity system in unifying the national database, strengthening data protection and expanding access to government services.

During the meeting, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, Kayode Adegoke, presented key provisions of the new legislation, highlighting universal identity as a fundamental right from birth, as well as National Identification Number (NIN) registration for migrants and refugees.

The NIMC team also visited the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, where discussions centred on strengthening collaboration to improve public service delivery through digital identity.

Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, expressed confidence that the new legislation would enhance public sector efficiency, noting that NIMC’s transformation agenda aligns with the Performance Management System of the civil service.

NIMC says similar engagements with other Ministries, Departments and Agencies will continue in the coming days as part of efforts to deepen collaboration and accelerate the implementation of Nigeria’s digital identity framework.
