The Federal Government and Canada have intensified discussions towards establishing direct flights between both countries as part of efforts to strengthen aviation cooperation and improve connectivity.
The discussions focused on developing a bilateral air services framework that would pave the way for direct flight operations between Nigeria and Canada.
Sproule disclosed that a high-level Canadian delegation will visit Nigeria in the first week of August to continue negotiations on the proposed Air Services Agreement and other related issues.
The Canadian delegation also raised the need for Standard Operating Procedures to strengthen cooperation on immigration matters, including the processing and return of Nigerian nationals who are not legally entitled to remain in Canada.
Keyamo welcomed the prospects of direct flights, noting that thousands of passengers travelling between Nigeria and Canada currently have to connect through Europe or the United States.
He said direct air services would reduce travel time, improve passenger convenience and strengthen economic and people-to-people relations between both countries.
The minister, however, explained that immigration-related matters fall outside his ministry’s responsibilities and would require collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and other relevant government agencies.
Both countries agreed to continue negotiations at a bilateral meeting scheduled for August 6, 2026, with officials expected to address outstanding issues and work towards an agreement on direct air connectivity.
