The Senate has approved a ₦50 million donation to the families of security personnel and teachers who lost their lives during the operation to rescue pupils and staff abducted from a school in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The announcement was made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Wednesday’s plenary, where lawmakers also commended the Armed Forces and other security agencies for securing the release of the abducted victims after 56 days in captivity.
Under the intervention, each of the five bereaved families will receive ₦10 million in recognition of the sacrifices made by their loved ones in service to the nation.
Akpabio recalled that the General Officer Commanding 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Chinedu Ralph Nnebeife, had earlier disclosed that three military personnel were killed during the operation to dismantle an Ansaru terrorist network operating within the Old Oyo National Park.
He also noted that several local hunters and operatives of the Amotekun Corps who supported the joint operation lost their lives.
The Senate President said the financial support is intended to assist the bereaved families while honouring the courage and ultimate sacrifice of the fallen personnel and teachers who gave their lives in the line of duty.
