Public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State have commenced an indefinite strike following the continued captivity of teachers and pupils abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

The industrial action was directed by the Nigeria Union of Teachers, which ordered its members to withdraw their services from all public schools with immediate effect.

In a statement signed by the Oyo State Chairman of the union, Hassan Fatai, the union said the strike became necessary due to growing concerns over the safety of teachers and learners across the state.

According to the union, the prolonged captivity of the abducted teachers and pupils has created widespread fear among educators, discouraged school attendance and heightened anxiety within affected communities.

The NUT stated that the action was intended to draw urgent attention to the need for intensified efforts to secure the safe release of the victims.

The union directed teachers to remain at home during the strike while assuring members that it would continue engaging relevant authorities until the abductees regain their freedom.

The development comes despite recent efforts by the Federal Government to secure the release of the victims.

President Bola Tinubu had approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards as part of measures aimed at strengthening security operations and supporting rescue efforts in the affected area.

A Federal Government delegation led by Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Defence Minister Christopher Musa and Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu recently visited Ogbomoso to meet with community leaders and families of the abducted victims.

During the visit, the delegation assured residents that security agencies had been directed to intensify efforts to rescue all those held captive and return them safely.

Earlier, Governor Seyi Makinde visited the affected communities and pledged that his administration would continue working with security agencies to secure the release of the abducted teachers and pupils.

Makinde described the incident as deeply troubling, particularly because it involved schoolchildren, and appealed to residents to remain united and supportive of ongoing rescue operations.
