Meta has confirmed a security breach involving the official Obama White House Instagram account after unauthorised content was published on the page before it was secured.
The account, @obamawhitehouse, reportedly displayed a series of unusual posts on Sunday, including an AI-generated image and messages that did not originate from the account administrators.
The unauthorised posts quickly attracted public attention before being removed by Instagram’s parent company, Meta.
In a statement, Meta confirmed that the account had been compromised but said it had regained control of the page and deleted all unauthorised content.
The breach also affected the account’s Instagram Stories, where several posts were reportedly published without approval.
The affected page serves as the official archival account of the Obama White House and has remained largely inactive since January 20, 2017, when power was transferred following the end of Barack Obama’s presidency.
Obama’s personal Instagram account was not affected by the incident.
Meta has not disclosed how the breach occurred or identified those responsible, stating that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The company said additional security measures have been implemented to prevent further unauthorised access to the account.
