The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has suspended its strike across public schools in Oyo State and directed all teachers to resume work on Thursday, July 2, 2026.

The decision followed renewed engagements with the Oyo State Government and assurances on measures to improve security after the abduction of teachers and learners in Oriire Local Government Area.

In a statement jointly signed by the Oyo State Chairman of the union, Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and Secretary, Olukayode Salami, the NUT said the suspension was approved by its national leadership after reviewing the security situation and appeals from the state government and other stakeholders.

The union said the government had assured it that sustained efforts were underway to secure the release of the abducted teachers and learners while strengthening security around schools and surrounding communities.

According to the union, government commitments include the establishment of a Joint Security Task Force to patrol vulnerable schools, improved emergency response, enhanced intelligence gathering, the deployment of technology to strengthen school security, and continued support for affected families.

Other measures include strengthening the Safe School Initiative, tackling criminal hideouts, illegal mining and open grazing in forest reserves, upgrading school infrastructure, improving the welfare of security personnel, and ensuring the prosecution of criminal suspects.

The NUT commended its members, the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), and the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON) for their solidarity throughout the strike.

While directing teachers to return to the classroom, the union urged them to remain vigilant and promptly report any security threats within their schools and communities to the appropriate authorities.

The union also reaffirmed its commitment to engaging the government until all concerns relating to the safety and welfare of teachers and learners are fully addressed.
