The Akwa Ibom State Government has commenced an operation to remove children begging on the streets of Uyo and place them under proper care and protection.
The exercise, led by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, began at the Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat Roundabout.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Inibehe Etukudo, said the intervention is focused on rescuing vulnerable children from the risks of street life rather than punishing them.
She said 10 children below the age of 18 have already been taken off the streets and moved to a government care facility where they will receive medical care, protection and other forms of support.
According to the Commissioner, the children had earlier been engaged by officials and agreed to be taken into government care.
Etukudo said the next phase will involve tracing their families and examining the circumstances that led them to the streets before deciding whether they can be safely reunited with their parents or guardians.
Some of the rescued children reportedly linked their situation to difficult family experiences, including rejection by fathers, challenges with stepmothers and other unstable home conditions.
