The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke, permission to present evidence of her acquittal by the Southwark Crown Court in the United Kingdom.
Justice Inyang Ekwo approved the application after it was moved by Diezani’s counsel, Godwin Iyinbor, and was not opposed by counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mofesomo Oyetibo.
The application followed Diezani’s acquittal by the UK court on June 17 over bribery allegations.
Diezani is seeking to reclaim assets previously forfeited to the Federal Government through a suit pending before the Federal High Court.
Her lawyer told the court that the application was necessary to bring the fresh development of the UK judgment before the court through a supplementary affidavit.
Although the EFCC described the application as an attempt to waste judicial time, the commission did not oppose the request.
Justice Ekwo subsequently granted the application and adjourned the matter until October 6, when both the EFCC’s preliminary objection and the substantive suit will be heard together.
