Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has condemned the killing of one of the teachers abducted during the recent attack on schools in Oyo State, describing the incident as a reflection of Nigeria’s growing loss of humanity.
Bandits had invaded the Esiele community in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State last Friday, abducting staff, students and pupils of Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School.
Reacting in a post on his X handle, Obi said the killing and other violent incidents across the country reflected a deeper moral and social crisis.
“Some events shatter a society so deeply that words are no longer enough to express the shock; the brutal killing of a teacher and the horrific rape and murder of an elderly woman are among such tragedies,” Obi stated.
He added that the incidents were “not isolated cases but signs of deeper moral and social decay,” warning that Nigerians were gradually becoming desensitised to violence and insecurity.
The former governor called for accountability and urgent systemic reforms, stressing that the country risks losing its shared humanity if citizens continue to treat such tragedies with indifference.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, had earlier confirmed that seven teachers and an unconfirmed number of pupils were abducted during the attack, noting that one of the teachers, identified as a Mathematics teacher, was killed by the attackers.
Teachers in Ogbomoso also staged a peaceful protest over the incident, demanding improved security around schools and the safe return of the abducted victims.
President Bola Tinubu, while reacting to the development, described the killing as barbaric and assured Nigerians that security agencies were working with the Oyo State Government to rescue the remaining victims.
