The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Anambra State Command, has arrested three suspects for allegedly engaging in illegal sand mining at Obiaja River in Idemili South Local Government Area.
State Commandant, Maku Olatunde, says the suspects were arrested during a joint operation by the Command’s Mines and Steel Development Unit and the Federal Mines Office in Anambra State.
The operation followed intelligence on alleged unauthorised mining activities at the river, popularly known as Mmiri Mgbo Obiaja Nnobi.
The suspects were identified as Patrick Anpue, Chidubem Ugammadu and Chukwuma Igwe.
The NSCDC also impounded two tippers and recovered six shovels and a wheelbarrow allegedly used for excavation.
According to the Command, the suspects admitted carrying out mining activities without authorisation or the required documentation from relevant authorities.
The NSCDC says investigations are ongoing and the suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion.
Commandant Olatunde warned individuals and groups involved in illegal mining to desist, while urging residents to report suspected illegal mining activities to security agencies.
