The Federal Government has announced plans to invest about ₦30 billion in the rehabilitation of Eko Bridge as part of efforts to strengthen critical infrastructure and improve transportation in Lagos.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this during an inspection of ongoing federal road and bridge projects in the state.

According to the minister, approximately ₦12 billion will be spent on emergency intervention works, while an additional ₦18 billion has been committed to ongoing underwater and structural repairs aimed at preventing further deterioration of the bridge.

Umahi said the rehabilitation forms part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to preserve key national assets and improve mobility within Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub.

He also announced plans for the construction of a new Carter Bridge, describing the project as part of ongoing efforts to modernise transportation infrastructure and enhance connectivity across the state.

The minister noted that the various road and bridge projects being executed by the Federal Government are designed to address infrastructure deficits, stimulate economic activities and improve public safety.

Speaking on the administration’s performance, Umahi defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against critics, arguing that leadership should be assessed based on tangible achievements rather than political rhetoric.

He maintained that the scale of ongoing infrastructure projects across the country demonstrates the administration’s commitment to national development and economic growth.

Umahi expressed confidence that the rehabilitation of Eko Bridge and the planned construction of a new Carter Bridge would significantly improve traffic flow, support commerce and deliver long-term economic benefits to residents and businesses.

The minister added that the projects are expected to strengthen transportation networks in Lagos and contribute to the government’s broader agenda of improving infrastructure nationwide.
