The Federal Ministry of Transportation has inaugurated a Project Implementation Committee for the Smart National Transport Databank Public-Private Partnership project.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi, inaugurated the committee in Abuja following the Federal Executive Council’s approval of the digital transport intelligence platform.

Adebiyi says the project is designed to address longstanding gaps in transport data collection, coordination and accessibility, while improving evidence-based planning and investment across Nigeria’s transportation sector.

The project will be implemented under a 20-year Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer concession with Asia-Arab Investment Nigeria Limited.

The committee comprises representatives of the Ministry of Transportation, Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology, Federal Road Safety Corps, Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, Federal Ministry of Works, Office of the National Security Adviser and other stakeholders.

Its responsibilities include monitoring implementation and project milestones, coordinating participating agencies, managing risks and ensuring financial and governance accountability.

Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology, Dr Bayero Salih Farah, says the databank will serve as a national transport intelligence infrastructure for planning, regulation, safety, security and infrastructure development.

The project will include at least 250 solar-powered intelligent gantries equipped with RFID and Automatic Number Plate Recognition technologies, Traffic Management Centres in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, a main data centre, electronic tagging, real-time analytics and cybersecurity systems.

The Ministry says the project will be implemented in phases to create a secure and nationally integrated transport intelligence system for government, transport operators and the public.
