The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, says the Federal Government is repositioning the Monotechnic and Technical Education Board, MBTE, to strengthen its supervision of polytechnics, monotechnics and other technical institutions across the country.
The restructuring, supported by KPMG, is aimed at improving the agency’s effectiveness and aligning technical education with the skills needs of Nigeria’s economy.
Alausa says the review will address institutional and operational gaps, while ongoing curriculum reforms will make technical education more practical and responsive to industry needs.

The exercise has produced 31 National Occupational Standards, providing a clearer skills pathway from artisan training to Ordinary National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes.
KPMG says about 93 percent of Nigeria’s workforce is in informal employment, while 12 percent of young people are neither in education, employment nor technical training.
The firm also found that more than half of the existing curricula assessed were outdated.
Alausa says strengthening the MBTE will help technical institutions produce skilled graduates capable of securing employment, starting businesses and contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth.
