Minister of Works, David Umahi, has ordered the temporary suspension of work on a section of the Ibadan-Ife-Ilesa Road project, directing the contractor to review its pavement mixture specifications before resuming construction.

Umahi issued the directive during an inspection of the Osun section of the highway, where he assessed the quality and progress of work being carried out by CBC Global Civil and Building Construction Nigeria Limited.

The minister instructed the contractor to study the pavement mixture being used on another project site and apply the lessons before continuing work on the affected section of the road.

He also directed the company to reduce activities on the carriageway and immediately deploy additional teams to concentrate on the construction of inner and outer shoulders, which he described as critical components of the project.

Umahi warned that failure to complete the project within the agreed timeline could result in sanctions, including the redeployment of the Controller of Works supervising the project in Osun State.

The minister expressed concern over the issuance of a ₦2.8 billion palliative certificate to the contractor, stating that he had not observed any corresponding palliative work on the road corridor.

He subsequently directed the Controller of Works to withdraw the certificate within 24 hours and instructed the contractor to execute the palliative works in line with the existing agreement.

Umahi further ordered the contractor to address failed and cracked sections of the road through milling and the application of binder to affected areas, stressing that future engagements would be based strictly on performance.

The minister also directed the removal of heavy-duty trucks parked on newly constructed concrete sections of the highway, warning that the practice could compromise the structural integrity of the pavement.

In addition, he instructed contractors handling solar streetlight installations along the corridor to suspend work until the construction of the road shoulders is completed.

Despite the concerns raised during the inspection, Umahi commended CBC Global Civil and Building Construction Nigeria Limited for sustaining work on the project despite outstanding payments from the Federal Government.

He noted that the contractor is handling about 108 kilometres of the road and has completed approximately 70 kilometres of the project.
