Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has challenged his players to demonstrate why they are regarded as one of Africa’s leading football nations when they face Norway in a crucial Group I match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Lions of Teranga will take on Norway on Tuesday morning, knowing that a positive result is vital to their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage of the tournament.
Senegal head into the encounter under pressure following a 3-1 defeat to France in their opening match.
Another loss would leave the West Africans facing a difficult path to qualification despite having one group match remaining against Iraq.
Speaking ahead of the fixture, Thiaw urged his players to respond with determination, discipline and intensity.
The Senegal coach said the team must rise to the occasion and justify the reputation they have built as one of Africa’s football powerhouses.
According to him, the players carry the expectations of both Senegal and the African continent and must reflect those expectations through their performance on the pitch.
Thiaw stressed that his squad possesses the quality and experience required to compete at the highest level and called on them to show character in a match that could define their World Cup campaign.
Senegal will be seeking their first points of the tournament against a Norway side that opened its campaign with an impressive victory and will be aiming to strengthen its chances of reaching the next round.
The match is expected to be a decisive test for the Lions of Teranga as they look to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
