The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has defended the absence of its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, from the signing of the National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.

ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, says Atiku’s absence was deliberate and intended to protest what the party described as the failure of the peace process to adequately address electoral violence.

Abdullahi argued that despite repeated peace agreements during previous elections, incidents of violence, harassment and inflammatory statements have continued without sufficient response from the National Peace Committee.

He cited events surrounding the recent Osun governorship election, saying the committee should go beyond organising signing ceremonies and ensure political actors are held accountable for violations.

Several presidential candidates signed the accord aimed at promoting peaceful and issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.

President Bola Tinubu and Atiku were absent from the ceremony, although the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, represented the President.
