Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has accused the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council of attempting to divert attention from President Bola Tinubu’s unfulfilled electricity promise through what he described as a lengthy list of laws, committees, bonds and projects.

Atiku made the allegation in a statement issued by the Director of Strategic Communication of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, Phrank Shaibu.

He said Nigerians continued to face unreliable electricity supply and rising electricity bills, despite the promises made by the Tinubu administration. He added that households and businesses were spending scarce resources on alternative power sources while struggling with the cost of living.

The ADC campaign council said consumers were being charged different electricity rates under Bands A, B, C, D and E without receiving reliable supply. It noted that some Band A customers pay about N209.50 per unit before VAT, while rates for other bands vary across states and electricity providers.

The council also questioned the Federal Government’s plan to end electricity subsidies from 2027, asking what impact the decision would have on consumers’ bills.

Atiku said that if elected, he would work with state governments and regulators to abolish the existing band system and introduce what he described as a fair, transparent and affordable electricity framework that protects households and holds power companies accountable.

The former vice president also recalled Tinubu’s campaign promise in 2022, when the president reportedly said Nigerians should not vote for him for a second term if he failed to provide constant electricity within four years.

Atiku’s campaign council insisted that Nigerians had lived through the period covered by that pledge and should not need further explanations from the president’s campaign team.

It also argued that the administration had not built any new power generation infrastructure of its own to increase the country’s electricity capacity. The council said the multitrillion-naira bond programme introduced to settle outstanding debts owed to generation companies could not replace the need for new infrastructure and reliable power supply.

The ADC campaign council further criticised electricity VAT and the proposed five per cent surcharge on certain fossil fuels, including petrol and diesel, under the Nigeria Tax Act. It said Nigerians deserved clarity on the potential additional energy costs, particularly as many households were already struggling to afford electricity.

In a separate statement, the council accused the Tinubu administration of what it described as a sustained and coordinated assault on democracy, freedom of association and political participation.

The statement, signed by its Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, cited alleged attacks on ADC leaders and members in Kaduna, the reported assault on the party’s Sokoto governorship candidate, Munir Dan Iya, and the reported demolition of its campaign office in Kebbi State.

It also referenced the alleged denial of a campaign venue in Enugu State to Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as well as reported attacks on African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, and other opposition figures.

The council said the incidents raised concerns about political freedom and pluralism ahead of the 2027 general elections. It maintained that no government could successfully suppress the democratic aspirations of Nigerians.

The ADC also accused the Tinubu administration and the APC campaign council of attempting to reinterpret the president’s electricity pledge through selective quotations and explanations.

It insisted that the president’s reported commitment was clear and could not be erased by subsequent statements. The council further claimed that electricity bills had increased under the administration, while some businesses, including hospitality operators, had been forced to ration power to reduce operating costs.
