The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has sworn in 68 legal practitioners as Senior Advocates of Nigeria, SANs, with a warning that the prestigious rank does not place them above professional accountability.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Supreme Court in Abuja during a special session marking the commencement of the 2026/2027 Legal Year.
The new Senior Advocates comprise 67 advocates and one academic, following their approval by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee in July.
Addressing the new SANs, Justice Kekere-Ekun described the rank as more than a recognition of professional achievement, stressing that it also represents a responsibility to provide leadership within the legal profession.
She urged the recipients to demonstrate humility, dignity, integrity and strict adherence to professional ethics while serving as role models to younger lawyers.
The Chief Justice also warned that disciplinary actions taken against senior lawyers during the previous Legal Year should serve as a reminder that professional status does not exempt anyone from accountability.
The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee approved the 68 lawyers for elevation at its 174th plenary session held in Abuja on July 23, 2026.
