Arsenal midfielder Bruno Guimaraes is doubtful for tonight’s Premier League opener against newly promoted Coventry City, manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed.
The Brazilian joined Arsenal from Newcastle United this month in a deal reportedly worth about 75 million pounds.
Concerns over his fitness emerged after he was substituted during Arsenal’s Community Shield victory over Manchester City on Sunday and was later seen applying ice to his leg.
Arteta says keeping his players fit will be crucial as Arsenal begin their title defence, after injuries affected the team at different stages of last season.
The Arsenal manager believes having more players consistently available will help the champions maintain their dominance and increase the gap between themselves and their Premier League rivals.
Arsenal have won 14 English top-flight titles but have never successfully defended the Premier League trophy. Their last run of three consecutive league championships came during the 1930s.
