The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has called for the regulation of bride price and marriage requirements across the state as part of efforts to strengthen family values and promote social development.
The resolution followed a motion presented during Thursday’s plenary by the member representing Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo State Constituency, Hon. Selina Ukpatu, who advocated the de-commercialisation of traditional marriage practices.
The lawmaker urged traditional rulers to review and harmonise bride prices and marriage requirements in line with prevailing economic realities, noting that excessive demands have placed undue financial burdens on intending couples.
Supporting the motion, other lawmakers observed that the increasing financial demands associated with traditional marriages have contributed to delays in marriage and have negatively impacted cultural preservation and societal values.
They stressed the need for a balanced approach that would preserve cultural heritage while making traditional marriage practices more affordable and accessible.
In his remarks, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong, referred the motion to the House Committee on Women Affairs for further legislative action.
The committee is expected to engage with traditional institutions and submit its findings and recommendations to the House within two weeks.
