Wike Defends Tinubu’s Reforms, Calls for Balanced Public Commentary

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described President Bola Tinubu as the only leader with the courage and capacity to address Nigeria’s long-standing economic challenges.

Speaking during his monthly media briefing in Abuja, Wike defended the administration’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of petrol subsidy, describing the decision as one of the boldest taken by any Nigerian president in decades.

He said the reforms required strong political will and maintained that President Tinubu had demonstrated the leadership needed to confront difficult national issues.

Wike also urged Nigerians to support the administration’s reform agenda, expressing confidence that the policies would deliver long-term benefits despite the current economic challenges.

He further questioned the neutrality of Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, following the cleric’s comments after a recent meeting between President Tinubu and members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria.

The cardinal had suggested that people around the President were presenting an overly positive picture of the country and that the President appeared focused on the 2027 presidential election.

Responding, Wike argued that public comments by religious leaders should be balanced and objective, warning that persistent criticism without acknowledging the government’s achievements could be perceived as politically motivated.
