Shettima with Costa Rican candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General, Rebeca Grynspan.
Vice President Kashim Shettima says Nigeria will support a candidate for United Nations Secretary-General who represents equity, justice and fairness and understands Africa’s aspirations in global affairs.
Shettima stated this during a meeting with Costa Rican candidate Rebeca Grynspan in New York, where she sought Nigeria’s support for her candidature.
The Vice President says Nigeria’s considerations will include its relationship with Latin America, gender inclusion, commitment to multilateralism, conflict prevention and support for Africa’s greater representation in global decision-making institutions.

Shettima also called for reforms to the global governance system, saying the existing structure does not adequately reflect Africa’s population and place in the international community.
Grynspan says her candidature represents the interests and demands of the Global South, adding that she understands Africa’s aspirations.
She also expressed support for reforms at the United Nations and said Africa’s push for permanent representation on the UN Security Council would receive attention under her leadership.
Meanwhile, Nigeria and the Netherlands have agreed to deepen cooperation on financial inclusion following a meeting between Shettima and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands in New York.

The Netherlands is expected to share expertise in areas including financial health, insurance, credit guarantees and data generation, with particular attention to women and vulnerable groups.
