Germany Accuses Russia of Leipzig Airport Drone Attack, Announces Retaliatory Measures

Germany has accused Russia of being behind a failed drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month and announced a series of retaliatory measures against Moscow.

German Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, says investigations into the August 4 incident found evidence consistent with what he described as Russia’s pattern of hybrid operations in Europe.

A drone carrying an explosive device was discovered near Ukrainian cargo aircraft at the airport but failed to detonate. Investigators also suspect a second drone collided with a cargo aircraft, while another drone was reportedly discovered near the airport 10 days later.

Russia has denied responsibility. President Vladimir Putin accused Germany of planting evidence, while the Russian Embassy in Berlin described the allegations as absurd.

In response, German Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, announced that Germany will close the Russian consulate in Bonn and terminate the contract for the Russian House in Berlin.

Germany will also tighten entry controls for Russian nationals and increase pressure on Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, which Western governments say is being used to circumvent sanctions.

Russia says it will respond with similar measures, describing Germany’s actions as an escalation in relations between both countries.

Germany has received support from NATO and European allies, with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte expressing solidarity with Berlin, while the European Union says it is preparing additional sanctions against Moscow.

The development comes amid growing concerns across Europe over suspected hybrid operations involving drones, espionage and sabotage around airports, military installations and other critical infrastructure.
