The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has threatened to begin mobilisation for a nationwide strike if its ongoing negotiations with the Federal Government fail to produce tangible results.
The warning followed a meeting between organised labour and government representatives at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment in Abuja on Thursday, October 22.
The NLC delegation, led by its President, raised several issues, including calls for a reduction in fuel prices, tax relief and the constitution of a tripartite committee on the minimum wage.
The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council, JNPSNC, also raised concerns over the payment of the 40 per cent peculiar allowance based on the ₦70,000 minimum wage.
According to the council, funds covering the allowance from May to December 2026 have been made available, but payment has been delayed. The matter is expected to be addressed at the next meeting.
Other issues include the wage award and implementation of hazard allowance for agricultural professionals in the public service.
Health sector unions also raised concerns over the adjustment and implementation of the CONHESS salary structure and outstanding professional allowances.
The meeting was adjourned to Tuesday, October 27, after concerns that some key government officials required to take decisions were absent.
Organised labour is demanding the physical attendance of senior officials, including the Minister of Finance, Accountant-General of the Federation, Director-General of the Budget Office and Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.
The NLC says it will begin sensitising and mobilising workers across the public and private sectors for an immediate nationwide strike if no tangible agreement is reached at Tuesday’s meeting.
