Kylian Mbappe scored twice, including a late winner, as Real Madrid defeated Barcelona in a thrilling El Clasico encounter to strengthen their challenge for the Spanish La Liga title.
The French forward opened the scoring four minutes before half-time after Gerard Martin’s attempted clearance of Yan Diomande’s low cross deflected off Mbappe and went past goalkeeper Joan Garcia.
Barcelona captain Raphinha restored parity 16 minutes into the second half, collecting a pass from Pedri before firing into the far corner.
Mbappe, however, struck again in the 87th minute to secure victory for Real Madrid.
The defeat ended Barcelona’s hopes of setting a new record for consecutive victories at the start of a Spanish top-flight season.
Barcelona remain top of the table after 10 matches, two points ahead of Atletico Madrid, while Real Madrid are a further point behind in third.
