Ukraine has urged the European Union to release €6.6 billion from the European Peace Facility to strengthen its military capabilities, saying the next six to nine months will be critical in determining developments on the battlefield.
In a letter dated June 26, Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said Ukraine’s defence requirement for the year is estimated at about €136 billion, while the country’s national budget can provide only about €53 billion.
According to the minister, Ukraine is also expected to receive about €28.3 billion in defence support this year through the European Union’s €90 billion loan programme.
Fedorov appealed to EU member states to channel the available funds under the European Peace Facility into immediate military assistance, describing the mechanism as one of Europe’s most effective tools for supporting Ukraine’s defence.
He argued that releasing the €6.6 billion without delay would maximise its military impact and enable Ukraine to strengthen its position during what he described as a crucial six-to-nine-month window on the battlefield.
