The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has expressed concern over reports that some tertiary institutions are delaying or refusing to refund tuition fees to students who had already paid before the disbursement of their student loans.
In a statement signed by its Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, the Fund also raised the alarm over arbitrary increases in tuition and other institutional charges by some schools, warning that such actions undermine the objectives of the Student Loan Scheme.
NELFUND said the Student Loan Scheme, introduced by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was designed to remove financial barriers to higher education and not to impose additional burdens on students.
The Fund disclosed that it is engaging the affected institutions and relevant authorities to ensure that eligible students receive due refunds and that institutional charges remain fair, transparent and consistent with the objectives of the scheme.
According to the statement, NELFUND remains committed to protecting the interests of students and preserving the integrity of the student loan programme.
The Fund warned that practices such as withholding refunds and arbitrary fee increases could jeopardise the gains of the intervention and called on tertiary institutions to align with the vision of expanding access to higher education for Nigerian students.
