The World Health Organisation has congratulated Nigeria for its handling of the country’s first imported Ebola case, following the medical evacuation of the patient and her husband to Switzerland.
The patient, who is a Swiss citizen, was evacuated after Nigerian health workers stabilised her condition. Her husband, also a Swiss citizen, accompanied her and remains under monitoring.
The WHO described Nigeria’s response as a remarkable achievement, commending the government, healthcare workers, clinicians and emergency responders for their efforts.
Following the evacuation, Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases, although health authorities continue surveillance and contact tracing to prevent further transmission.
Nigeria will continue monitoring 52 people who had contact with the patient, while Switzerland will take responsibility for her continued medical care and the monitoring of her husband, listed as contact number 53.
The WHO stressed that vigilance remains essential as Nigeria continues its public health response.
