Nine persons have been confirmed dead while 27 others were rescued alive following the collapse of a two-storey building at Alakija Bus Stop in Satellite Town, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said rescue operations at the site have been concluded after coordinated efforts involving emergency responders, sister agencies and community members.
According to LASEMA, the rescued victims received immediate medical attention and were transferred to nearby hospitals for further treatment, while the deceased, including a two-year-old girl, were handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit for identification and release to their families.
The agency said heavy-duty excavators were deployed to support rescue efforts and ensure access to trapped victims.
Meanwhile, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the Lagos State Building Control Agency to commence an immediate structural integrity assessment of adjoining buildings and enforce compliance with building regulations in the area.
The state government also extended condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The incident comes less than 24 hours after another building collapse in Rivers State, amid growing concerns over recurring structural failures linked to poor construction practices and substandard building materials.
