Chelsea have agreed a £7.5 million fee to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
The Argentina international is expected to undergo a medical in London ahead of a move to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s decision follows concerns over the recent performances of first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, particularly during Monday’s 3-2 victory over Fulham.
Sanchez allowed Josh King’s effort to slip through his grasp at the near post before spilling another shot into a dangerous area in the second half, leading to a goal for Gonzalo Garcia.
The move for Martinez represents a change in Chelsea’s position, with the club previously prepared to continue backing Sanchez, who has been their first-choice goalkeeper since 2023.
Martinez is now expected to strengthen Chelsea’s goalkeeping options as the club moves to complete the transfer before the deadline.
