FIFA President Gianni Infantino has written to all 211 member associations, offering them $40 million each if they support his controversial proposal to allow private investment in FIFA’s major competitions.
Infantino has set a September 19 deadline for football federations to accept the proposal if they want to access an initial $20 million.
Under the plan, FIFA intends to establish a commercial subsidiary to manage its major events, including the FIFA World Cup, with external investors allowed to acquire stakes in the new entity.
The proposal has triggered opposition from football bodies across Europe, Asia and North America, amid concerns over private investment in some of the sport’s biggest competitions.
UEFA has strongly criticised the plan, arguing that the World Cup is not FIFA’s to sell.
The European governing body is also expected to convene an emergency meeting of its 55 member associations later this week to discuss the proposal.
