FIFA has rejected claims that it is selling football as it defended its controversial proposal to allow private investors to acquire minority stakes in its competitions.
The response follows UEFA’s decision to boycott future World Cups if the proposal goes ahead.
CONCACAF, whose member nations co-hosted the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has also rejected the proposal put forward by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Under FIFA’s statutes, the plan requires the support of 106 of its 211 member associations to be approved. UEFA and CONCACAF together account for 96 votes, leaving the proposal facing significant opposition.
In a statement released on Friday, FIFA said discussions surrounding the proposal had been affected by what it described as inaccurate media reports.
The world football governing body maintained that the proposal does not amount to selling football and said it would continue consultations with its member associations.
FIFA added that every member association would be given an opportunity to consider the proposal and cast its vote based on the facts.
