The Federal Government has described the Ibom Medical City Project as a flagship healthcare initiative that will position Akwa Ibom State as a major destination for medical tourism while strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, stated this during the unveiling of the Ibom International Hospital and Medical City Project in Ikono Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The project, unveiled by the Akwa Ibom State Government, is expected to serve as a strategic investment in healthcare infrastructure and contribute to the expansion of quality healthcare services in the state and across the country.
Speaking at the event, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem John, described the proposed 350-bed Ibom International Hospital as a catalyst for social development, economic growth and sustainable healthcare delivery.
He noted that the facility would complement ongoing efforts by the administration of Governor Umo Eno to improve healthcare services, including the establishment of oxygen banks across the state’s three senatorial districts.
Stakeholders and project officials also highlighted the significance of the project, noting that it is expected to stimulate economic activities, attract investments and create employment opportunities.
Governor Umo Eno said the hospital is designed to provide world-class healthcare services to residents while reducing the need for medical trips outside the state and the country.
He added that the project aligns with the state’s broader development agenda aimed at improving the welfare of citizens and expanding critical infrastructure.
In his remarks, Professor Ali Pate said the Federal Government remains committed to transforming the nation’s healthcare sector through strategic investments and partnerships.
The minister noted that the current administration has recorded progress in key health indicators, including a reduction in maternal mortality, while continuing efforts to improve access to quality healthcare services.
The Ibom Medical City is expected to provide advanced specialist care, diagnostic services, surgical procedures, cancer treatment, radiation oncology services and other specialised medical interventions.
The project is also expected to strengthen healthcare delivery, boost medical tourism and contribute to economic development within Akwa Ibom State and beyond.
