The Benue State Government has denied allegations by Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, that suspected thugs linked to the government prevented him from visiting Yelewata to commiserate with families affected by the 2025 attacks.
In a statement, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Hyacinth Alia, Tersoo Kula, described the allegations as unfounded and rejected any suggestion that the state government was involved in the reported incident.
The government says Governor Alia does not promote or deploy thugs and relies on recognised security agencies to maintain peace and security across the state.
It also questioned whether relevant security authorities were formally notified of Obi’s visit, arguing that such a visit would ordinarily require coordination with the police and other security agencies.
The state government suggested that any disagreement surrounding Obi’s visit could be connected to internal political issues within the NDC and should not be attributed to Governor Alia’s administration.

It urged the public to disregard allegations linking the government to the incident, saying its focus remains on governance, security and improving the welfare of residents.
The government added that Benue State remains open to political actors and other Nigerians who visit peacefully.
