The Yobe State Government says it has vaccinated 43,720 children against poliomyelitis during its 2026 supplementary immunisation campaigns across the state’s 17 local government areas.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Hadiza Sabo, disclosed this during the commemoration of World Polio Day in Damaturu, where she represented the Commissioner for Health.

Sabo said the reported vaccination figures exceeded 100 per cent of the targeted population, highlighting the need to validate population estimates and improve planning to ensure accurate coverage data.

She stressed that the government would use the data to identify remaining gaps, follow up on seven settlements reported as unreached and ensure that every eligible child receives the vaccine.

Sabo credited health workers, community mobilisers, surveillance officers, data teams, local government authorities and development partners for the progress. She also acknowledged the contributions of traditional rulers, religious leaders and other community stakeholders.

However, she warned against complacency, describing the remaining vaccination rounds scheduled for November and December 2026 as critical to consolidating progress and closing outstanding immunity gaps.

She called for timely funding, reliable vaccine supplies, effective cold-chain arrangements, stronger community mobilisation and prompt follow-up of children who missed vaccination.

The World Health Organisation’s State Coordinator, Hamisu Alhassan, urged parents to take their children to the nearest health facility for routine immunisation and other essential health services, stressing that they should not wait for special campaigns to protect their children against preventable diseases.
