As Nigerians experience rising temperatures and concerns grow over the effects of El Niño, a climate health specialist, Dr Peter Oji, has urged the public to take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
Speaking on ADBN TV’s Morning Express programme, Oji highlighted the health risks associated with extreme heat and stressed the need for people to adapt to changing weather conditions.
He advised Nigerians to drink plenty of water, wear light clothing, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day.
Oji warned that prolonged exposure to extreme heat could lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and potentially life-threatening heatstroke. Common warning signs include dizziness, headaches and weakness.
He also emphasised the importance of access to safe drinking water, adequate ventilation and shaded areas to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
The discussion highlighted the need for greater public awareness and preventive action, with Nigerians encouraged to move to cooler environments and seek medical attention if symptoms become severe.
