National Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for a peaceful and non-violent campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections after his convoy was blocked by youths in Benue State.
Obi was travelling from Makurdi to Yelewata, where he was scheduled to meet and commiserate with victims of the June 2025 attacks, when his convoy encountered a roadblock along the Makurdi-Gboko highway.
The blockade, reportedly mounted by youths suspected to be supporters of a political party, prevented the convoy from continuing the journey and caused traffic congestion along the highway.
Reacting to the incident, Obi urged young Nigerians not to allow themselves to be used as instruments of political violence.
The former Anambra State governor said he decided not to proceed with the journey to avoid confrontation and prevent possible threats to the lives of residents and other road users.
Obi also called on the Inspector General of Police and other security agencies to intervene and ensure that political candidates and citizens can move freely without intimidation.
He described the incident as unacceptable and urged political actors and their supporters to embrace peaceful participation as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
