Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has commended the National Assembly for passing the State Police Bill, describing it as a courageous and timely step toward strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor said the bill seeks to establish a state policing structure that will operate alongside the existing federal police system.

Governor Alia, a long-time advocate of state policing, noted that the legislation would enhance the protection of lives and property by bringing policing closer to communities.

He explained that state police would have a better understanding of local dynamics, cultures and terrain, enabling faster and more effective responses to security threats.

The governor recalled that the House of Representatives passed the bill weeks ago, while the Senate’s concurrence confirmed the determination of the National Assembly to address the country’s security challenges.

He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as visionary leadership and commitment to reforming Nigeria’s security framework.

Governor Alia assured residents of Benue State that his administration would continue to invest in security and support reforms aimed at guaranteeing peace, safety and prosperity for the state and the country at large.
