President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to consider and approve a constitutional amendment bill seeking the establishment of state police across the country.

The request was conveyed in a letter dated June 15, 2026, and read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

According to the President, the proposed Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) State Police Bill, 2026 seeks to amend relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution to create the legal framework for the establishment and operation of state police services.

Tinubu explained that the bill is designed to address the country’s security challenges through a dual policing structure that would allow federal and state police formations to operate side by side within a constitutional framework.

He noted that the proposal builds on previous legislative efforts undertaken by the National Assembly and incorporates additional safeguards to ensure effective implementation.

The President described the bill as a critical component of his administration’s efforts to reform Nigeria’s security architecture and strengthen the protection of lives and property across the country.

He also appealed to lawmakers to give the proposed legislation expeditious consideration.

Speaking after reading the President’s letter, Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the proposal as a significant step towards improving security and enhancing community participation in law enforcement.

Akpabio noted that local communities are often better positioned to identify suspicious activities and provide useful intelligence that can support crime prevention and public safety.

He further stated that several state governments have indicated their readiness to implement the initiative once the constitutional amendment process is completed.

Following the presentation, the Senate President referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Constitution Review for further legislative action.

The committee is expected to report back to the Senate on the next legislative day as lawmakers continue consideration of the proposed constitutional amendment.
