The House of Representatives has adjourned plenary in honour of the late member representing Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency, Yaya Bauchi Tongo, who died on June 12 at the age of 62 after a brief illness.
The House resumed sitting after a two-week legislative recess, with proceedings beginning on a sombre note as lawmakers were formally notified of the late lawmaker’s passing.
Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, described Tongo’s death as a painful loss to the parliament and called on members to remain united in supporting the bereaved family and one another during the period of mourning.
Lawmakers observed a minute’s silence in his honour before Muslim and Christian prayers were offered for the repose of his soul and comfort for his family.
The House also acknowledged the conferment of a Fellowship Award by the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, on the Chairman of the House Committee on Federal Polytechnics and Higher Technical Education.
Plenary was subsequently adjourned as a mark of respect for the late legislator.
