The Nigeria Union of Teachers has demanded the immediate release of teachers and schoolchildren abducted in Oyo State and other parts of the country, warning that it may embark on a nationwide strike if the victims are not rescued.
The union made the demand during a solidarity rally held in the Federal Capital Territory, where members expressed concern over the growing insecurity affecting schools across Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, the National President of the NUT, Audu Amba, said persistent attacks on teachers and students pose a serious threat to the education sector and undermine efforts to improve learning outcomes.
He called on both the Federal Government and state governments to take urgent steps to strengthen security around schools and ensure the safety of education workers and learners.
According to Amba, educational institutions must remain safe environments for teaching and learning, stressing that insecurity continues to disrupt academic activities in several parts of the country.
The union leader also reaffirmed the NUT’s directive to primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to withdraw their services following the abduction of their colleagues and students.
The union maintained that the safety of teachers and schoolchildren must remain a national priority and urged authorities to intensify efforts to secure the release of all victims and prevent further attacks on schools.
