The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to transform innovation and creativity into drivers of economic growth through the implementation of the country’s National Intellectual Property Strategy.
The assurance was given during the first official visit of WIPO Director General, Daren Tang, to Nigeria.
Tang highlighted the growing importance of intellectual property in the global knowledge-based economy, noting that emerging economies such as Nigeria are increasingly becoming creators of intellectual property rather than just consumers.
He stressed the need to integrate intellectual property into national economic planning, business development, research activities and the creative industry to unlock greater economic opportunities.
According to him, WIPO remains committed to supporting Nigeria in strengthening its intellectual property ecosystem and harnessing innovation for sustainable development.
Tang also outlined key areas of cooperation between WIPO and Nigeria, including intellectual property financing, technology transfer, youth empowerment, support for creative industries, small and medium-sized enterprises, and capacity building.
Also speaking, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall, described Nigeria’s creative sector as a major force for development, inclusion and economic resilience.
He noted that strengthening intellectual property protection would help unlock the full potential of the country’s innovators, creators and entrepreneurs.
The visit marks a significant milestone in relations between Nigeria and WIPO as the country intensifies efforts to build a knowledge-based economy driven by innovation and creativity.
WIPO also announced plans to work closely with Nigerian authorities in implementing the National Intellectual Property Strategy and expanding programmes aimed at supporting innovators, researchers, creators and businesses across the country.
