England manager Thomas Tuchel says it is impossible for his side to adapt to the high altitude in Mexico City ahead of Sunday’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash against co-hosts Mexico.
England secured their place in the knockout stage after coming from behind to defeat Congo DR 2-1 in Atlanta. Brian Cipenga gave Congo DR an early lead before Harry Kane scored twice to send the Three Lions through.
Mexico have played three of their four matches at the Azteca Stadium, which sits about 2,240 metres above sea level, giving the hosts a significant advantage.
Tuchel says England cannot physically adjust to the altitude within four days, describing it as a major obstacle, but insists his players are mentally prepared for the challenge.
The England boss also expressed concerns over possible off-field distractions, including travel arrangements and disturbances around the team’s hotel, but said his squad is ready to overcome whatever challenges they face.
He, however, noted that England have already adapted to the heat and humidity after arriving early in the United States for a pre-tournament training camp in Florida.
The winners of the match between Mexico and England will face either Brazil or Norway in the quarter-finals.
