President Bola Tinubu has charged Team Nigeria to compete with honour, discipline and integrity at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Speaking during the team’s ceremonial send-off in Abuja, the President urged the 72-member contingent to pursue success through fair play, stressing that Nigeria’s reputation would depend not only on the medals won but also on how they are earned.
He encouraged the athletes to compete with courage, unity and patriotism, reminding them that they are ambassadors of Nigeria and should uphold the country’s values throughout the competition.
Tinubu also emphasised the importance of clean sports, noting that his administration has strengthened Nigeria’s anti-doping framework through the enactment of the Nigerian Anti-Doping Act and the inauguration of the board of the Nigerian Anti-Doping Centre.
The President expressed confidence that Team Nigeria has the talent and determination to surpass the country’s best-ever performance at the Commonwealth Games.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, commended the Federal Government for its continued support for sports development, while Director-General of the Commission, Bukola Olopade, said a successful outing in Glasgow would attract greater private-sector investment into Nigerian sports.
Team captain Oluwafemi Folashade pledged that the athletes would represent Nigeria with honour and make the country proud.
The 72-member Nigerian contingent will compete in 10 sports at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
