The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly possessing a loaded locally made shotgun in Ikot Ekpene.
The suspect, identified as Mfon Essien of Ikot Inyang Itak Village in Ikono Local Government Area, was intercepted by police operatives along Ayah Road, off Uyo Road, on September 6.
The Command says the arrest followed credible intelligence, with officers recovering a locally made shotgun loaded with a live cartridge and concealed in the suspect’s clothing.
The suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue to determine the source of the firearm, why it was being carried and whether he has links to individuals or criminal networks involved in illegal firearms.
Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, says the Command will continue intelligence-led operations and patrols to remove illegal weapons from circulation and prevent violent crime.
He also urged residents to provide timely and credible information on suspicious persons, illegal firearms and other criminal activities, assuring that the identities of informants will be kept confidential.
