Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has called for VAR to be scrapped following the controversy surrounding Erling Haaland’s goal in the Manchester derby.

Haaland scored from Joško Gvardiol’s cross in the 60th minute, with the goal initially ruled out for offside before being awarded following a VAR review.

Premier League refereeing body, Pro Ref, has since contacted Manchester United to acknowledge what it described as an error of judgement over the decision.

Schmeichel, who made 292 appearances for Manchester United, criticised the use of VAR, which was introduced in the Premier League during the 2019/20 season.

The former Denmark international says VAR is interfering with football rather than improving the game.

He argued that the technology has taken away some of the emotion and spontaneity that make football exciting and believes it should be scrapped.
