The Delta State Police Command has arrested two suspects and recovered two pump-action guns, 18 live cartridges and other dangerous items in separate intelligence-led operations across the state.
The operations were carried out by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, VCRU, and the Command Anti-Cult Unit, CACU.
On September 12, VCRU operatives acting on intelligence stormed a residence in Obiaruku, where they arrested 36-year-old Joel Iwomi after a search of the premises led to the recovery of a pump-action gun and 18 live cartridges.
In a separate operation on September 9, operatives of the Command Anti-Cult Unit arrested Chukwuka Nzete, also known as Ododo, in Isupe Community, Ndokwa West Local Government Area.
Police say Nzete was suspected of involvement in the illegal sale and proliferation of firearms and was also alleged to operate a shrine where suspected criminal elements were fortified.
A search of his residence reportedly led to the recovery of another pump-action gun, four dagger knives, a battle axe and pots containing substances suspected to be charms.
The suspects remain in custody while investigations continue into their activities and possible links with other criminal elements.
Commissioner of Police, Samuel Erale, reaffirmed the Command’s determination to prevent criminal elements from accessing illegal firearms and urged residents to provide credible information on suspicious persons and criminal activities.
