Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has urged African youths to take an active interest in leadership and politics, saying their participation is crucial to shaping the continent’s future.
Oborevwori made the call while declaring open the fifth edition of the Social Innovation and Leadership Bootcamp, SILB Africa 2026, in Asaba, with the theme, “Architects of Change.”
Represented by the Commissioner for Transport, Onoriode Agofure, the Governor challenged young people to move beyond complaints about governance and become actively involved in the political process to drive meaningful change.
He says effective leadership requires courage, commitment, selfless service and the ability to transform ideas into practical solutions.
Oborevwori also urged young Africans to embrace innovation, create economic opportunities, build sustainable enterprises and contribute to the development of their communities.
The Governor says his administration’s MORE Agenda prioritises youth empowerment through skills acquisition, entrepreneurship and technological innovation.
He highlighted initiatives by the Delta State Job and Wealth Creation Bureau, entrepreneurship programmes and the Delta State Innovation Hub as part of efforts to equip young people with practical skills for economic independence.
Oborevwori also cited specialised programmes, including electric vehicle training for young Deltans, as part of efforts to prepare youths for opportunities in emerging industries.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Mentoring and Development, Elvis Akpobi, says the bootcamp is designed to equip young people with the leadership skills, knowledge and exposure needed to contribute to the development of Nigeria and Africa.
About 50 international delegates participated in the programme, with stakeholders calling for greater opportunities for young people to participate in governance and policymaking.
